SPF Makeup

With all the free time many of us are having and the beautiful weather (thank you Jesus🙌) I had to share this reminder! It takes approximately 7-14x the normal amount of foundation used to meet the needed amount of SPF. Not only will we never apply enough for coverage but a majority of formulations are not “broad spectrum” so they only protect against UVB rays, UVA rays are more commonly linked to premature aging. Although makeup with sun protection is complimentary to your existing sunscreen products it should not be used alone. Practice safe sun ☀️

What is your skin telling you?

Being on the business side of the spa industry previous to becoming a skin therapist, I had a pretty good idea that my education would not be over after esthetics school. I had the amazing opportunity to work with Marywynn Ryan while I was attending and after school (which was like an advanced course on steroids) but even still quickly realized unless we could trade brains or become attached at the hip, I needed to spend a majority of my free time learning more. I signed up for a college course on nutrition and then added a side course in holistic healing. Skin health is so often a mirror of what is going on internally and facials and products can 100% help calm and repair the barrier (or exacerbate the issue if it’s not the right fit) but if you don’t get to the root of the problem it can be like a band-aid. Placing the product on the breakout or flare up once it has already occurred instead of stopping it from happening in the first place. There are so many conditions that cause major skin problems like hyper/hypothyroidism, PCOS, immune disorders, unbalanced gut, hormonal imbalance, to name a few. You can eat “clean” and still have these issues. There are specific foods to treat and to avoid that may typically seem like healthy choices. It requires a two step approach, a knowledge of internal and external modalities to heal the skin. Of course, we all know those anomalies that go against all standard health practices and still have glowing skin, that’s why I say ALMOST always. I adore social media influencers but everyone’s routine is personal to their skin, there is no “one-size-fits-all” with products. So something you see that worked great for your friend or that girl with perfect skin online most likely wouldn’t be the exact same on your skin. Trust me, I wish that were true! Everyone’s skin is unique because there is SO much more going on than just what you see on the surface.

The Squeaky Clean Myth

6/28/2019

Picture
Many clients come in under the impression that their skin isn’t clean unless it feels tight after a cleanse. Unfortunately that feeling comes at a price, over-stripped skin. Many foaming and gel cleansers on the market (especially those for acne-prone skin) are too harsh and leave the barrier at an unhealthy PH. The barrier requires its natural lipids to maintain regular sebum production, cell turnover and a balanced microbiome. Many oily-skin people are told that to remedy that problem they need harsh scrubs and strong acid cleansers, when really by doing so they are teaching their skin to produce more oil by thinking it is dry. Over-stripping compromises the skins natural immune system making it unable to perform properly and leaving it exposed to environmental aggressors. A proper cleanser is your first step to healthy skin.

The most important part of any skin therapy treatment is the initial client skin analysis.

Without it you may as well be baking a cake without knowing the ingredients and then not following the recipe. You can mix everything together in a bowl, pour it into a dish and put it in the oven… but when it comes out the other end the result is going to be unpredictable and looking nothing like a show prize winning sponge.

It might taste ok, it is still cake after all, but it wont look exactly like you want it to. And if you over cooked it… well there’s no coming back from that!

Not all recipes are right for every skin type.

By gathering as much information as possible during an advanced skin analysis, you are able to ensure that you can create a customized recipe for the skin condition and skin type that is in front of you. It’s about being a master chef of skin and knowing exactly how to get those ingredients to work together to give a beautiful end result.

Treating without a thorough consultation can leave you making assumptions that are not customised to each client. This leads to the potential results being vague or non-existent and increases the risk of creating further damage to the intricate cells structures and functions. You cant come back from an over cooked cake, no matter what you try!

When a client visits my studio, the first thing I do is to begin to understand the journey they have been on.
Their skin story started long before what I see presented before me and depending on what recipe’s and ingredients they have tried before, it may or may not affect the new recipe I cook up for them.

A Skin Analysis begins with a discussion to determine the length of time they have had this skin condition, how it has changed and progressed over time and how it has made them feel. By understanding this journey it allows me to further understand the leading cause, the level of cellular damage and the correct course of treatment for their individual needs.

Having a clearer idea about a clients diet, health and lifestyle history, gives clues as to what the underlying cause or contributing factors of their skin condition might be and how we can tweak all aspects of the recipe to ensure that we are managing all of these things.

In the consultation I will find out if perhaps treatments they have had in the past have potentially contributed to the current health of their skin, or if it has helped to improve the way the skin is functioning. Knowing this also helps me determine the way this clients skin may respond to my customised treatment program or if it will even respond at all.

An Advanced Skin Analysis helps you to understand extrinsic and intrinsic factors or a skin’s condition. Some we can improve others we cannot. Despite the heavy marketing of treatment modalities and product lines being ‘suitable for all skin types’, putting all skin conditions into one basket leads to a ‘one size fits all’ mentality. But every skin is different. An incorrect treatment choice can exacerbate the condition; sometimes in the case of pigmentation this can be irreversible. This is why a thorough skin analysis is vital to our clients’ treatment success.

An intimate knowledge of cellular structure and function is extremely important as a skin therapist, more so than any other hands on skill.

Many therapists graduate with confidence in the ‘how’ to perform a treatment, but they lack confidence in what is happening to the skin on a cellular level. How does that treatment modality affect the keratinocyte and the wound-healing cascade? What other cells are involved in the story and how will the chosen modality affect them? Have I prepared the skin as best I can?

Knowing your cells and systems is vital to the results of any skin treatment program. Without consulting the findings of a skin analysis, you are just going through the motions of a treatment, believing that the results will show up at the end. But no two skins are the same so to achieve results, your program will always vary, based on the information gathered at your skin analysis.

Winter Workout Skin Protection

While your body is reaping the benefits of winter sports, your skin may be paying the price. Here are some tips to prevent dry and chapped skin so you can explore the outdoors in peace this season because let's be honest, it is gorgeous in the PNW!

SPF:
Cooler temps and darker skies can lead you to believe the sun isn't as damaging this time of year. Don't be fooled, UV rays are still out to get you and can be extra damaging when reflected off that beautiful blanket of snow and potentially higher altitudes. Applying Circadia's Light Day Sunscreen SPF 45 and keeping a mineral SPF (my favorite is Brush on Block) with you can be a real skin saver in these conditions.

Protective clothing:
Considering windburn can affect any exposed skin, the best solution is to cover up. Simply put, dress like a ninja.  A breathable face and neck cover that goes from neck to right below eyes and proper hat to protect forehead is your best bet. Pair this with a nice pair of polarized sunglasses or goggles and you are good to go!

Hydration:
Even though you may not be sweating as much in winter workouts, the air is much drier inside (with heaters on) and outdoors (with freezing temps). Don't let the cooler temps trick you into ignoring your need for fluids. Your skin needs water and oil to ensure a properly functioning barrier. Drink your water and eat lots of Omega-3s to create proper skin health from the inside out.

Bump Up Your Moisturizer:
As many of you already know, it is important to change your routine with the seasons. The moisturizer that you love in the summer is usually not enough in the winter. Along with the proper moisturizer, when you are going to be outside for extended periods adding a balm or oil is essential as well. I love the Tu'el Detox Essential Oil for more acne-prone skin types or Circadia's  Hydralox for more lipid-dry skin. Don't forget the eye area in this routine either, with Tu'els Eye Revive Tri-Complex Firming Peptide Cream you will be covered.

Now get out and explore this beautiful time of year!

Summer Travel Skin Regimen

PRE-PLAN YOUR PROTECTION—Up your hydration game to prepare for a trip. Apply a hydrating mask right before you leave the house for your flight (Super Soothe 2 in 1 Mask by Tu'el is my pick) to protect your skin for the day. Pack a hydrating/antioxidant mist in your carry-on to apply during the flight. Use a heavier body cream or oil from the neck down. Products that are too heavy for everyday use are perfect for the dehydrating effects of a long flight.

DRINK WATER AND TAKE FISH OIL— A glass of water every hour to be specific and Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega is my favorite for fish oil.. Our skin needs both water and oil to balance our barrier. Hydration inside and out will help you to look and feel so much better when you arrive at your destination.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM—Take some Vitamin C and Nettle Tea Leaf supplements to help prevent the post-flight bug and any allergies you may encounter on your journey. Nettle Tea is a natural supplement without the dehydrating effects of other allergy medications.

SPF—Apply sunscreen when you board and every 2 to 3 hours of flight. This rule only applies during daylight hours, obviously. Also, make sure you packed enough for the duration of your trip. You should be applying every 80 minutes when in the sun so take that into account when planning how much you will need.

DON'T SACRIFICE YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE— If purchasing travel size products of your whole regimen isn't in the travel budget, purchase travel containers. Many stores offer these including Target and they are less than $1. I have had too many clients come in with very irritated and inflamed skin who used whatever products the hotel carried because they didn't want to check a bag. Totally worth buying travel containers to use the routine that is customized to you.

ENJOY YOUR TRAVELS!

Facial Cupping has arrived!

I am beyond excited to announce that we will now be offering facial cupping. The results from this treatment are immediate and impressive. Although it has been around for thousands of years in Europe and Asia, it has gained popularity more recently in the states. Unlike the body treatment, facial cupping is a form of suction massage that will not leave any redness or bruising.

Results you can expect include:
– Increased blood circulation, firmness and tone
– Plumps wrinkles and fine lines
– Facial glow as nutrients are brought to the epidermis
– Drainage of stagnant fluid with increased lymphatic performance
– Improved elasticity
– Softened scar tissue
– Reduced inflammation
– Reduced headaches and migraines
– Decreased sinus congestion
– Better absorption of face products
– Loosen rigid muscles of TMJ
– Provides temporary relief for facial paralysis, stroke or Parkinsons
